Twitter

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Twitter is a micro-blogging platform.  It is a powerful media stream. An important part of Twitter is commenting on topics within the media stream. It is not for chatting.

Listed below are links to the Twitter class videos. Under each video are questions for your consideration.  Remember, these videos pop up onto a new page. Please turn off pop-up blockers.

Twitter Video 1: Basic Introduction

Four questions to answer based on the video:

  • What should your screen name be?
  • What type of media stream do you hope to develop? (Topics, subjects and types of people to follow)
  • What type of follower do you wish to attract?
  • What kind of content do you think the your potential followers would like to see?

Seven words screaming pay attention – Headlines Matter!

Monday, September 15th, 2008

Seven words screaming pay attention – Headlines Matter.

I was reminded about this a few Friday’s back. Maybe I should have been watching Kelly and Laura Jean more carefully when they were watching the band What Happened In Vegas play a live set at the local Hot Topic store. Instead, I was across the way at a news kiosk looking at magazines.

Here are the headlines that screamed off the covers to me:

  • Shia LeBeouf can’t get laid – Details
  • Uma Opens Up – InStyle
  • Rule Your School – YM
  • Tim McGraw reveals his new tatoo – People
  • The 5 Faces of Barrack Obama – Time
  • Too Busy To Live? – O Magazine

My point is this: you have to draw people in as quickly as you can. As you drive past a billboard, you only have a finite amount of time to make a first … and lasting impression. Great headlines say something in only seven words. Bad ones ramble.

Alas, some of these headlines resulted to sex, power or extreme behavior to cut through the clutter. I’m sure that Shia has his share of girlfriends. Ms Uma is being more candid then anything else. YM isn’t advocating marshall law. Oprah is preaching time management. The Democratic Party presidential candidate doesn’t have multiple personality disorder. On these, some of you may beg to differ …

The power of a synopsis is to draw us in … not to disappoint us. When talking about your work, writing ad copy, or just putting a subject in an email – craft something that shows some more thought then a million monkeys on a million computers writing Shakespeare. And always strive to do it in seven words or less!

You have a story to tell

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Marketing is about telling your story.

What is your story?

Your story can be about your history.   The people you have worked with and the experience you have earned.  It can be about your style and what it takes for you to create.  It can also be about your business practices and the service you offer.

No matter what you do, if you are going to be successful in marketing yourself, you must have a story.

You need to learn how to tell your story well.  The story has to be easily repeatable and something others would enjoy to sharing.

I have a couple stories.  My pricing story, more then others, has earned me thousands of dollars and great clients.  It is a easily repeatable story that my networking partners can share.  It states that Rosh is a quality photographer, his photography is of high value, but using him is very low risk.  The client is always in control of their budget.

I have multiple true, sincere and authentic stories.

They work.

What is your story?

The art of keyword placement: SEO secret #4

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Where you place your words and how they are emphasized makes a difference.

Key words placed near the top of the page take priority over words place at the bottom of the page.  Words emphasized in bold and with <H1> tags offer higher value then plan text.

Google wants your key words but they only need to see them a few times to be satistified that your page is supporting its claims.  But, Google is not the only game in town.  The other players tend to be more receptive to additional key words, but you don’t want to be punished by Google for Key word “stuffing”.

For example:

Rosh Sillars is a Detroit people photographer specializing in people.  He likes photographing people on location and shooting people in the studio.  As a Detroit people photographer he takes pride in his people photography.

As you can see the word people is over done and the paragraph really doesn’t sound very good.  Although, for some search engines the above sentence would be effective, Google would again look down upon a web site full of such paragraphs.   So, balance is a key.

Secret #4: Key word emphasis and placement is about balance.
